改正1：The thing that most touched me was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.

改正2：What most touched me was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.

改正3：It touched me most that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.

解析：The thing that…定语从句特别啰嗦，不如用What替代，而此处用It touched me most that…强调句式也不错，更简洁。另，touch my heart是中国式英语，用touch me替代更好。

在此，我需要阐明一个道理。我们学习英语，需要反复学习精读教材和原版词典，而不需要去仔细研究考试题，尤其，我们没必要学习考试题目中的表达和写作逻辑。为什么呢？所有的考试题，只是为了测试你是否掌握了某些英语知识或技能。为了这个目的，出题者有意写出一些文章，或者用需要考的词汇和表达对原本存在的文章进行替代。考试题中的文字，本就不是现实中可以随意应用的表达方式和句子，所以我们无需对其反复研究，或者模仿。就拿上面这段文章来说，很多地方是生硬的、做作的。比如，文中用了很多定语从句。文章的作者应该是个孩子，会在自己的文章中写这么多定语从句吗？当然不会！无非是因为高中阶段定语从句是重点，命题人员故意把某些句子修改成定语从句罢了。又如文章第三行开始的这一句话Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us.此处用了each and every one代替all，多么啰嗦，且无必要。一个孩子写篇纪念狗的“软文”会无缘无故地用each and every one这么“高大上”的词汇代替all吗？当然不会。这当然是命题者试图把阅读理解的难度增加而进行的词汇替换。在我手头的《漂亮的英文句子：英文这样写就对了》（谷约著，北京：北京语言大学出版社，2014.1）一书第3页这样说：

Each and every one表示“每一个人、全体”时多用于强调，而此处并不需要这种强调效果，反而显得多余，可用表示整体的all来代替，使句式更为简洁。

除此之外，还有如下问题：

第二段最后一行的I saw a tear in her eyes.最好改为I saw tears in her eyes. Tear是可数名词，但一般用作复数形式，这一点查柯林斯词典便知。

第三段倒数第二行This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth.拗口，不如It might frighten people because of her showing her teeth. 这可能会吓到人们，因为她露出了牙齿。

另外，此段文章还有印刷错误5处以上。

总而言之，这本是一篇小孩子写出的幼稚文章，然后又被命题老师改成了更糟的垃圾文章，我们不需要将其奉为圭臬。

本来，一篇试题中的阅读理解文章，我们做完题目，对对答案，了解自己怎么对，又是怎么错的，那么就结‬束了。为何去仔细研究文章的语法呢？这就是我们人性中想要得到太多的“贪婪心”作怪。贪婪心有好的方面，也有坏的方面。好的方面见下面这个故事：

一位老和尚，有群弟子。某天，他吩咐弟子们都渡河去山上打柴。弟子们行至河边，却发现洪水封路，无法上山打柴，无功而返，非‬常烦‬恼。唯独一个小和尚递给师傅一‬个苹‬果，说：“过不了河，打不了柴，我‬见河边有棵苹果树，就顺手把唯一的苹果摘来了。”后来，这位小和尚成了老和尚的传人。
