翻译的美---夏日绝句

节选自《梦与真：许渊冲自述》

远在母亲比较项羽和拿破仑之前,李清照就写过关于项羽的短诗:

“生当作人杰 ,

死亦为鬼雄。

至今思项羽,

不肯过江东。”

这首诗写出了一千年前人们对项羽的看法: -一个人活着要做个人中豪杰,死了也要成为令人怀念的阴魂。直到今天大家还在怀念项羽,因为他从江东带了八千子弟兵,百战百胜,大败秦兵，最后兵败乌江。八千子弟多已战死沙场,项羽也不肯渡乌江回江东,重整旗鼓，争天下，而宁愿与八千子弟同归于尽,浩气长存。这短短的二十个字,写出了改变历史的英雄人物义重如山的英雄气概。这样的咏史诗能不能翻译成英文呢?

《中国翻译》总226期发表了- -篇《乌江七译比较研究》(简称《七译》) , 现在先看胡品清(中学时代同学,后为台湾文化大学教授)的译文:

Living , one should be an outstanding man ,

Dead，one should be an outstanding ghost .

Even today I forget not Xiang Yu ,

Who refused to go the east side of the river

“生死”二字译得非常简练，“当为”“亦为” 却译得一样,散文味重;“思” 字用反译法,说.是“没有忘记”, 是用双否定来译肯定,可以算是”等化”；“不肯过江东” 却是逐字直译。但是为什么不肯呢?如果读者不知道历史事实,那就莫名其妙，译文是“等”而不“化”,不能使人“知之”了。原诗每行五字,形式整齐,译文却长短不一,缺少形美, 不能使人“好之”。原诗有韵，富有音美，译文没有,不能使人“乐之”。是不是译文形式整齐而且押韵就可以使人好之、乐之呢?那也不定。

请读《七译》中的另外一首:

Be an outstanding man if you've a breath ;

Be a heroical ghost after your death。

Up to now Xiang Yu is still remembered ,

Because he rather died than surrendered .

译文每行十个音节,和原诗-样整齐而有形美;每两行押韵,和原诗-样有音美。是不是可以使人好之,就要看译文的意美了。译者把“生"说成“有一口气”， 虽然不错,语气就大不同了。“鬼雄”译得比胡译好,但应用would rather die ,死后怎么称雄呢?颇令人费解。“思”字说是 “记得”，有一点散文化，不如胡译。最后-行译作“宁死不屈”比胡译好,但应用would rather die ,和史实并不相符，而“意美”是比音美、形美更重要的。

我的译文如下:

Be man of men while you're alive ;

Be soul of souls if you were dead .

Think of Xiang Yu who'd not survive

His men whose blood for him was shed.

《七译》评者认为“前两行堪称神似典范”但是后两行“与原诗差别较大”。可见他还是对等派论者,看不出“不辜负为他流血牺牲的江东子弟”与“不肯过江东”的神似关系:不肯过江东正是因为不肯辜负江东父老子弟。这是按照中国译派“从心所欲不逾矩”的理论译出的“意美”。母亲影响了我译诗的“音美”, 父亲则影响了我译诗的“形美”。
