When I looked out into the early morning the sky was full of a gray dawn light but the sun had not yet risen. Water and air were pallid. Across the bay the moon was a luminous disc in the western sky, suspended above the dim line of distant shore — the full August moon, drawing the tide to the low, low levels of the threshold of the alien sea world. As I watched, a gull flew by, above the spruces. Its breast was rosy with the light of the unrisen sun. The day was, after all, to be fair.Later, as I stood above the tide near the entrance to the pool, the promise of that rosy light was sustained. From the base of the steep wall of rock on which I stood, a moss covered ledge jutted seaward into deep water. In the surge at the rim of the ledge the dark fronds of oarweeds swayed smooth and gleaming as leather. The projecting ledge was the path to the small hidden cave and its pool. Occasionally a swell, stronger than the rest, rolled smoothly over the rim and broke in foam against the cliff. But the intervals between such swells were lo ng enough to admit me to the ledge and long enough for a glimpse of that fairy pool, so seldom and so briefly exposed.And so I knelt on the wet carpet of sea moss and looked back into the dark cavern that held the pool in a shallow basin. That quaint tower never ceased to stick out a mile whenever we were bolting on one stretch of the Fifth Road, but we'd never been aware what it scans is an expansive park called Yuanboyuan. We went there for a weekend respite today – it's said online that now is the best time for a visit for an eyeful of peach flowers.

每次奔驰在五环路上的某一段那个古色古香的塔总是一眼就能看到，可要不是周末这天选择出去透透气，都不会知道那塔高高耸立的地方就是一个巨大的公园，叫园博园。网上说，现在是去赏桃花的最佳时机。

Over one hour's drive later we found ourselves at the entrance to the park where all mask-wearing visitors were required to scan their two-dimensional codes to prove they had not been exposed to COVID-19. Inside was a hive of activity. The pent-up impatience of small creamy white peach flower buds could seemingly be felt as they were bursting on tree branches to provide an inviting background for weekenders seeking photogenic moments, including not a few young women who had intentionally dressed up in traditional Chinese costumes. In fact, you were also impeccably clad in a traditional Chinese dress thanks to mummy.

驱车一个多钟头到了园博园门口。游客门都带着口罩，要扫码确认自己无新冠风险才能入内。公园里很热闹。似乎能感觉倒乳白色的小桃花已被压抑得太久，早已迫不及待，在树杈上顶出来。周末出动来借桃花景照相的人很多，留下美好瞬间，有不少年轻女性有意提前穿上了传统中国服装照相。其实，妈妈也给你搭配了一套得体的传统汉服。

We picked a grove in the shadow of the park's signature tower where mummy laid out on the ground what you said was a picnic blanket. Time to tuck in - mummy had bought the food in Carrefour for us three would-be picnickers. Sunlight filtered through tree branches and dappled the ground around us where we could catch a sniff of rotten leaves. You and I lay on our back on the blanket, looking into a patch of blue sky framed by treetops, as if we were star-gazers.

在园博园那座标志性高塔附近找了一块林地，妈妈在地上铺上那块你说是野餐地毯的野餐布。开吃了，东西是来之前妈妈刚从家乐福买的，我们仨本来就想野餐一次。林中，阳光透过树杈间的缝隙流淌下来，周围斑驳的地面散发出丝丝腐叶的气味。你和我仰面躺在野餐布上，看着头顶树梢勾勒出的一块蓝天，就好像我们是在看星星。

You ran around like crazy, swinging your small kite mummy had bought you at the entrance to the park, right in front of the tower. Beyond the tower soon came the moment of truth. Peach flower buds at foothills with a flight of stone steps leading up to the hilltop were a joy to behold, drawing visitors in droves. We stayed close to the white buds for a while. Trains not in sight were heard occasionally trundling nearby, sending quivers through the ground.

在高塔前面，你舞动着妈妈在门口买的风筝玩命地来回跑。过了高塔不久，就是真正的重点。山脚下一大片桃花特别养眼，吸引了一群一群的游人，从此拾级而上可达山顶。我们在桃花附近呆了一会儿。偶尔听见有火车隆隆地经过，地面都有点发颤，不过看不见火车的身影。

The sky was clouding over. Gusts of stiff wind came from nowhere, whipping up and fluttering furiously your kite on a short string and making it crisply crackly. "Not a benign wind," mummy said – true, the wind had kicked up a thin cloud of dust in the distance. We quickly made it back to the car park.

天空开始阴沉下来。不知从哪儿刮来一股股风，猛抽着短线拽着的风筝，让风筝疯了似的舞动，发出清脆的劈里啪啦的声音。“不是好风，”妈妈说。确实，远处风已掀起了薄薄的烟尘。我们加快脚步回到了停车场。

You crashed out, strapped in, on our way back home. You must be feeling shattered after having walked yourself off your feet.

回家的路上，就那样拴在座椅上，你迷迷糊糊地睡过去了。公园里走了那么久，你一定是走累了。
