Wars come and go, but my soldiers stay eternal。

Practice 5

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer 2 with a single line through the centre.

Passage 1

Social parasitism(寄生状态) involves one species relying on another to raise its young. Among vertebrates, the best known social parasites are such birds as cuckoos and cowbirds; the female lays an egg in a nest belonging to another species and leaves it for the host to rear. The dulotic(奴役现象的) species of ants, however, are the supreme social parasites. Consider, for example, the unusual behavior of ants belonging to the genus Polyergus. All species of this ant have lost the ability to care for themselves. The workers do not forage for food, feed their brood or queen, or even clean their own nest. To compensate for these deficits, Polyergus has become specialized at obtaining workers from the related genus Formica to do these chores.

In a raid, several thousand Polyergus workers will travel up to 500 feet in search of a Formica nest, penetrate it, drive off the queen and her workers, capture the pupal brood, and transport it back to their nest. The captured brood is then reared by the resident Formica workers until the developing pupae emerge to add to the Formica population, which maintains the mixed-species nest. The Formica workers forage for food and give it to colony members of both species. They also remove wastes and excavate new chambers as the population increases.

The true extent of the Polyergus ants' dependence on the Formica becomes apparent when the worker population grows too large for the existing nest. Formica scouts locate a new nesting site, return to the mixed-species colony, and recruit additional Formica nest mates. During a period that may last seven days, the Formica workers carry to the new nest all the Polyergus eggs, larvae, and pupae, every Polyergus adult, and even the Polyergus queen.

Of the approximately 8,000 species of ants in the world, all 5 species of Polyergus and some 200 species in other genera have evolved some degree of parasitic relationship with other ants.

21. Which of the following statements best represents the main idea of the passage?

A)Ants belonging to the genus Formica are incapable of performing certain tasks.

B)The genus Polyergus is quite similar to the genus Formica.

C)Ants belonging to the genus Polyergus have an unusual relationship with ants belonging to the genus Formica.

D) Polyergus ants frequently leave their nests to build new colonies.

22. The author mentions cuckoos and cowbirds in the first paragraph because they ______.

A) share their nests with each other

B) are closely related species

C) raise the young of other birds

D) are social parasites

23. Which of the following is a task that an ant of the genus Polyergus might do?A) Look for food. B) Raid another nest.

C) Care for the young. D) Clean its own nest.

24. What happens when a mixed colony of Polyergus and Formica ants becomes too large?

A) The Polyergus workers enlarge the existing nest.

B) The captured Formica workers return to their original nest.

C) The Polyergus and the Formica build separate nests.D)The Polyergus and the Formica move to a new nest.

25. According to the information in the passage, all of the following terms refer to ants belonging to the genus Formica EXCEPT the ______.

A) dulotic species of ants

B) captured brood

C) developing pupae

D) worker population

Passage 2

In a time of low academic achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan, a country of high academic achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents(答问卷者)listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The vast majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.

In the recent comparison of Japanese and American preschool education, 91 percent of Japanese respondents chose providing children with a group experiences as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. Sixty-two percent of the more individually oriented(强调个性发展的)Americans listed group experience as one of their top three choices. An emphasis on the importance of the group seen in Japanese early childhood education continues into elementary school education.

Like in America, there is diversity in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of being eventually admitted to top-rated schools and universities. Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.

26.We learn from the first paragraph that many Americans believe ______.

A) Japanese parents are more involved in preschool education than American parents

B) Japan’s economic success is a result of its scientific achievements

C) Japanese preschool education emphasizes academic instruction

D) Japan’s higher education is superior to theirs

25. Most Americans surveyed believe that preschools should also attach importance to _____.

A) problem solving B) group experience

C) parental guidance D) individually-oriented development

28. In Japan’s preschool education, the focus is on ______.

A) preparing children academically

B) developing children’s artistic interests

C) tapping children’s potential

D) shaping children’s character

29 Free play has been introduced in some Japanese kindergartens in order to ______.

A) broaden children’s horizon

B) cultivate children’s creativity

C) lighten children’s study load

D) enrich children’s knowledge

30. Why do some Japanese parents send their children to university-based kindergartens?

A) They can do better in their future studies.

B) They can accumulate more group experience there.

C) They can be individually oriented when they grow up.

D) They can have better chances of getting a first-rate education.

Passage 1

24. 答案为D)。 文章第三段第一、二句指出,“The true extent of the Polyergus ants’ dependence on the Formica becomes apparent when the worker population grow too large for the existing nest. Formica scouts locate a new nesting site, return to the mixed-species colony, and recruit additional Formica nest mates.”

25. 答案为A)。 由文章的第二段及第三段第一句“The true extent of the Polyergus ants’ dependence on the Formica becomes apparent when the worker population grow too large for the existing nest.”

Passage 2

26. 答案为C)。 原文第一段第二句“However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find.”

28. 答案为D)。 根据第一段倒数第二句“…, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group.”,日本的学前教育注重培养孩子学会坚持,集中注意力和团队精神,这些都属于性格的,选项D)“塑造孩子的”性格符合题意。

29. 答案为C)。 本题的出题点在文章最后一句“Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.”(自由表演用于解决某些幼儿园过重的学习负担),选项C)是对此的同义转述,因此是本题的正确答案。

30. 答案为D)。 最后一段第四句“Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of being eventually admitted to top-rated schools and universities.”(日本的一些父母让孩子去大学的附属幼儿园,认为这样孩子更有机会进入一流的大学和学校),选项D)符合题意。
