提到《乌合之众》（The Crowd：A Study of the Popular Mind），即便你不曾真正阅读过，也一定听说过这本书。作为法国心理学家、社会学家古斯塔夫·勒庞的代表作，他当初写作时并未预料到这本书在一个多世纪后的热度始终不减。

自1895年问世以来，《乌合之众》这本小书无数次再版，被译成近二十种文字，而在国内，它已有近20个版本，想必今后还会出现更多。在某瓣上，《乌合之众》更是排在了“社会心理学图书”类的第一名，遥遥领先于其他这类著作，11万余的评价和讨论也体现了它的惊人影响力。

在各类专栏、知乎、b站等媒体上，《乌合之众》被各种分析解读，许多人将它捧上神坛，借以批评乃至讽刺当下的一些乱象，也有不少人指出书中种族主义等危险的政治立场。

一般特征

1. 心理群众由异质成分组成，只是一种暂时现象。人们一旦结为一体，就获得了特有的心理特征，就像细胞构成生命体一样。在新的生命体中重聚的细胞与单个的细胞截然不同，它们表现出全然不同的新特点。

2. 群体里积累的只有愚蠢，而不是天生的智慧。如果“整个世界”指的是若干个群众的集合，那就根本不像常言所说的那样，整个世界比伏尔泰聪明，而肯定要说，伏尔泰比“整个世界”更聪明。

3. 一旦群众形成，个人就很难约束自己不产生这样的念头：群众有匿名性，个人不负责任。因此，约束着个人的责任感便荡然无存了。

4. 匿名群众缺乏责任感，非匿名群众形成了责任感，因此，两类异质性群众的行为就表现出截然不同的倾向。

31. 群众的一切信念都具有一种宗教的形式。在群众心目中，受其拥戴的英雄是名副其实的神。

32. 政治家最必要的任务之一，就是用受欢迎的词语或者至少是中性的词语，为民众难以容忍的顶着旧名称的事物进行洗礼。词语的威力非常强大，选择得当就足以使最可恶的事情被群众接受。

33. 在同一个社会，同样的词语对不同的阶层往往有不同的含义；表面上，人们用词相同，但不同的阶层所用的语言是绝不相同的。

34. 在每个社会领域，从最高贵者到最低贱者，人只要一脱离孤独状态，立刻便堕入某个人物的影响之下。大多数人，尤其是群众中的大多数人，除了自己的专长之外，对任何问题都没有清楚而合理的想法。领袖就成为他们的向导。不过，领袖也可以被报刊取代，虽然效果很不理想，但它们为读者制造舆论，提供现成的套话，使他们不必动脑筋。

35. 威望的特点就是使我们看不见事物的本来面目，使我们的判断力彻底麻木。群众在一切问题上都亟须现成的意见，个人一般也是一样的。这些意见的流行与其正确或错误的程度毫无关系，只受威望大小的制约。

36. 今天，由于讨论和分析，一切意见都失去了威望；其特征很快消磨殆尽，幸存的意见极少，难以唤起我们的热情。现代人越来越受害于麻木不仁了。

情感

37. 催生情感的不是理性，情感对理性置之不理。情感是一切文明的主要动力，名誉、自我牺牲、宗教信仰、爱国主义、对荣誉的热爱等情感都是文明的动力。

38. 宗教情感的特点十分简单：对某个想象中的居高临下者的崇拜，对其威力的畏惧，对其命令的盲从，无力探讨其信条，渴望传播其信条，把不接受其信条的人视为寇仇，如此等等。

39. 褊狭与狂热必然和宗教情感相生相伴。凡是自信掌握了世俗或永恒幸福的秘诀的人，必然会表现出褊狭与狂热。凡是受到某种信念的激励而相聚的人，都会显示出这两种特征。

40. 群众的情绪夸张，容易膨胀，一旦表现出来，任何情绪都能通过暗示和传染过程而迅速传播。如此一来，群众所明确赞扬的事物就会力量大增。

最后，对于这样一本盛行一个多世纪的畅销书，它是否名副其实，也始终是值得一辩的问题。著名社会学家罗伯特·默顿分析了《乌合之众》的诸多矛盾。

毫无疑问，对于试图了解集体行为机制和社会心理学的人而言，这是一本必读书，它与我们的时代也息息相关。如今已被证明，书里的一些概念或被人误导，或误导别人，或全然错误，它包含了驳杂的意识型态，但是来自各种意识形态背景的读者都认真对待它。

《乌合之众》始终体现了对重要现象的问题意识，勒庞考察了大量现代人所感兴趣的问题：社会顺从和过分顺从、趣味单一、大众的反叛、大众文化、受他人支配的自我、大众运动、自我异化、官僚化机制、逃离自由却落入领袖的怀抱以及无意识在社会行为里的作用等。

因此，《乌合之众》的当代意义在于其发现问题的功能，而不是解决问题的功能。这本书的主题在于强调人类的非理性和无理性，按照这种描绘，人很容易受他人操纵、控制，莫名其妙地受他人欺骗；但我们也需要注意到，有被控制的人，就必然有控制者。

然而，我们也需要注意到勒庞方法的缺陷以及他观点中的粗糙，他写作时无意识地糅合了很多种意识形态。他并非“先知”，在学术人品上，他毫无顾忌地剽窃了塔尔德、西盖勒、泰纳等一干群众理论家的成果，

对于“乌合之众”的翻译本身，译者何道宽也表达了自己的怀疑。现今的译本中，都采用了这种主标题译法，而对于副标题，基本采纳“大众心理研究”或“群体心理研究”。然而，在心理学里，crowd（群众）不同于group（群体），“群众”是非理性群体，不容混淆。

在西方群众心理学中，对“群众”的简明界定是：群众是未分化的大众（masses），是有一定组织化程度的群体（group）。进而译者选择将副标题译为“群众心理研究”，虽然为了约定俗成，主标题依旧采纳更具贬义的“乌合之众”。

但无论如何，《乌合之众》始终具有现实意义。在互联网时代，人人都是信息的生产者，有望成为信息中心，人人都可以制造话题；受欢迎的博主很快就成为“舆论领袖”；一只蝴蝶可以掀起翻天巨浪，一句谣言可以使万民不安。这本书对于我们分析、认识、应对和矫正“群众”的非理性行为依旧有所助益。
