周周说名校｜“美国最美丽的城市校园”，连续3届总统均出自于此

位于康涅狄格州纽黑文市的耶鲁大学，是美国历史上建立的第三所高等学府，也是常春藤盟校之一，校园风光秀丽，古朴宁静。

校园篇

与很多美国大学一样，耶鲁大学本科提倡通才教育，以保证毕业生拥有广博的知识面和多维度看问题的视野。走进耶鲁校园，260座建筑物涵盖各个历史时期的设计风格，被誉为“美国最美丽的城市校园”。如果有机会去到耶鲁校园，不妨了解以下几处建筑。

耶鲁纪念馆是为了纪念在第一次世界大战中牺牲的耶鲁校友而建。

哈克尼斯钟楼是一座具有两百多年历史的哥特式建筑，至今仍然保存完好，且钟楼上大钟的时间一直准确无误。有意思的是，据说钟楼的设计者詹姆斯·罗杰斯为了让它看起来更有沧桑感，爬到塔顶亲自泼下硫酸，使得斑驳的石壁呈现出老旧的感觉。耶鲁大学校园里面有很多哥特式建筑，且许多都是人工仿古做旧的，也许这样的沧桑感更能凸显学校厚重的气质。

1918年，约翰·威廉·斯特林给耶鲁大学捐赠了一大笔钱，用来建造斯特林纪念图书馆。由于捐赠的钱只能建楼不能买书，耶鲁一位叫昌西·布鲁斯特·廷克的教授号召耶鲁校友捐出自己收藏的古籍和珍本，为新建的图书馆增光添彩。

校友们纷纷行动起来，捐赠的图书中就包括后来成为镇馆之宝的《谷登堡圣经》等。到1958年，耶鲁大学收藏的珍本、善本及手稿已经多达13万册，原来的斯特林纪念图书馆已经无法容纳日益增多的藏书，于是，捐赠过多种珍本的拜内克家族决定再捐钱建造一座专门用来收藏珍本和手稿的图书馆，拜内克珍本与手稿图书馆由此而来。

校友篇

除了耶鲁的建筑，杰出的校友同样为人称道。历史上，共有5位美国总统毕业于耶鲁，甚至还创造了惊人的奇迹：连续3届总统均出自耶鲁。其中，克林顿总统与他的夫人希拉里就是在耶鲁法学院的图书馆里相识。

除此之外，耶鲁还为学术界、影视圈输送了大量的精英人才。著名影星朱迪·福斯特和詹妮弗·比尔斯都毕业于耶鲁大学文学院。梅丽尔·斯特里普毕业于耶鲁大学戏剧学院。影星爱德华·诺顿毕业于耶鲁大学历史系。《时代周刊》的著名专栏作家凯文·翠林也是耶鲁校友……

在耶鲁的一众杰出校友里，还有一位或许很多人不一定知道，他的名叫内森·黑尔，美国历史上第一位间谍，他的故事还收录在我国中学生的英语课本里。1773年，黑尔从耶鲁大学毕业后，在康涅狄格州教书。

独立战争爆发后，充满一腔爱国热情的他参加了北美人民组建的大陆军。由于受到英军的攻击，大陆军被迫撤退。当时的大陆军统帅乔治·华盛顿急需了解英军的军力和部署，为此需要派遣一名间谍打入英军控制区刺探军情。黑尔主动请缨，并把这次任务看作是自己应尽的爱国责任。1776年9月，他离开营地，乔装成一名荷兰教师潜入敌后，但在执行任务时不幸被俘。在被英军送上绞刑架前，黑尔留下了一句掷地有声的名言：“我唯一的遗憾，是我只有一次生命献给我的祖国（I only regret I have but one life to lose for my country）。”
