学英语根本不需要死记单词
许多人认为,学英语就是记单词和背语法,最关注的就是词汇量。无论是中小学生,还是大学生,人手一本词汇书,每天都会花大量时间背单词,背得昏天黑地。
结果,孩子的时间被空耗了,记住的单词多数都忘记了,好不容易记住的单词都白记了,因为孩子说的写的用的都是标准的Chinglish(中式英语)。
在一次英语学习经验交流会上,一位英语翻译专业研究生介绍学习经验时说:“我将朗文词典背了3遍,牛津词典背了2遍。”我非常佩服这位研究生的“愚公”精神,但他的学习方法却极不可取。
如果这位研究生当时将他背词典的时间用来阅读,他的语言水平一定会高出许多,也不会浪费掉那么多宝贵的青春时光。
许多父母总是希望孩子多认字、多记单词,如果孩子没把一本书中的汉字或单词认完,就会觉得书被浪费掉了。事实上,语言能力与识字量没有绝对的关系,有些文章,虽然每个字词都认识,但我们仍然不能读懂或不能正确解读。
词汇量固然重要,但我们不能把英语课变成单词课,事实上,大量阅读比死记单词更有利于掌握词汇。
切记:词汇量只是阅读的副产品,千万不要让孩子死记硬背单词,而是应该通过大量阅读来提高语言能力。
阅读才是学习英语的最好方法
学习英语,方法比汗水重要,坚持阅读,几年时间下来,孩子的英语语言能力就会得到极大的提升。
阅读时,不要纠结于单个的单词,而应尽量掌握文章的全局,着眼整个句子、段落、语篇,有时甚至需要调用历史、政治、科技等背景知识,才能从整体上理解一个单词的意思。
所以,当阅读过程中遇到生词时,让孩子尽量根据语境去推定单词的意思。所谓语境,也就是我们常说的上下文(context),包括单词所在的句子、所在的段落、整个语篇、整本书,甚至是社会百科知识。
如果以单词为中心进行阅读,阅读速度会很慢,且阅读效率极低。指导孩子阅读时,只要能大致读懂段落,让孩子不要去深究每一个单词的意思,允许“囫囵吞枣”,读懂文本大意即可。
英语词汇量以百万计,即便是一辈子从事英语专业学习研究的人,也会经常遇到生词。英语母语者即便拥有两、三万词汇量,但仍然经常会遇到生词。世界上英语词汇量最大的人是莎士比亚,他虽然掌握了10万词汇,但相较于100万+的英语词汇来说,仍然不及其十分之一。
换句话说,学习使用英语遇到生词是常态,对于一些不认识的单词,虽然不知其准确含义,但完全可以通过上下文推定词义。
同时,可根据单词的词根、词缀(相当于汉语的偏旁部首,比如月字旁表示肥、胖,与肉相关,英语中re-表示再,反馈等意思)联想推定单词词义,一个单词重复再现足够多次以后,孩子自然就将单词记住了。
学好英语的最佳路径:阅读20本以上英文小说
孩子学英语,根本不需要死记硬背单词!如果真要背,也应当是具备一定的阅读能力和词汇量以后,让孩子有意识积累识记一些词根和词缀。
孩子英语能力达到一定程度后,可以为孩子买一本字根词典。引导孩子在进行英语阅读时,有意识地总结不同单词共同拥有的词根、词缀。当孩子记住一、两百个词根词缀后,孩子的词汇量就很容易突破一万甚至两万。
每个人小时候,都不是父母天天念字教词学会的说话,上学时,也不是老师反复教字认词学会的写作。
单块的砖头,如果不与其他建筑材料结合,数以亿计的砖头,也不可能建起高楼大厦;单个的单词,若不与其他单词建立联系,成千上万的单词存入大脑也只能抓瞎。
当年杨振宁、李政道等西南大学学生刚到美国时,他们校友中流传着一种英语学习体会:“读20本英语小说,选非英语作家的作品,如托尔斯泰、莫泊桑等。”
非英语作家作品的英文版,翻译者用的是大众语言,极少用生僻词,特别适合英语学习者阅读。读了20本英语小说后,相当于美国大学文化程度的英语水平。
不难看出,学好英语的根本方法是大量阅读,而不是死记硬背单词;阅读英文文本,最好选择英文小说,至少阅读20-30本以上。
